We recruit multiple fully funded four-year PhD students every year (mainly in Fall) in the Department of Data Science at City University of Hong Kong. Research areas include (but not limited to) generative AI, large language models, foundation models, and AI for science.

We offer multiple fully funded four-year PhD positions every year, with diverse admission pathways: regular admission, HKPFS, and the Joint PhD scheme.

What strengthens your application

  • In CV: Your background, GPA and English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) — CityU has specific requirements, so please highlight these clearly.
  • In CV or by Google Form: Publications, national awards, homepage link, research projects or internships, and class ranking.
  • In Email or by Google Form: Strong coding ability (Python, PyTorch, and Codex etc.). Evidence of research ambition and passion.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

Exceptionally qualified students are encouraged to apply for the HKPFS, which also covers tuition and on-campus accommodation support.

Official evaluation criteria include your background, GPA, national awards, English proficiency, and publications.

Joint PhD Program

HK$18,700 / month at CityU (HK) Dual supervisors · dual degrees Apply Oct–early Dec via home university

Partner-university PhD students (or already-admitted candidates) can earn degrees from both universities under a dual-supervisor system. Apply through your home university (not directly to CityU); contact DSAIL first to discuss fit. English: TOEFL 79 or IELTS 6.5.

联培院校在读/已录取博士可申请双导师联合培养，毕业获两校学位。经本校提交申请，可与 DSAIL 联系表达意愿。英语：托福 79 或雅思 6.5。
